A councillor in Salford has joined a new political party.

What you need to know about Greater Manchester’s first Your Party councillor.

  • A councillor in Salford has joined Your Party, the new political outfit founded by ex-Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana. John Warmisham, representing the Pendleton and Charlestown ward, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) today (December 1) that he has made the decision to sit as a Your Party member in the council chamber.
  • It comes months after he resigned from Labour and accused the party’s national leadership of ‘no longer representing the communities that it was set up to serve.’ The LDRS understands Mr Warmisham is the first Your Party councillor in Greater Manchester.
  • He previously said he plans to stand down in May 2026 after more than three decades in politics, but left the door open to standing somewhere as a ‘paper candidate’ if Your Party called on his support.
  • Salford council has updated its website to list Coun Warmisham as a Your Party member. The veteran councillor said his decision to leave Labour was not an attack on Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett or the local Labour group in the city. He said: “Salford Labour Party is still socialist, it was nothing against them or Paul Dennett the Mayor, it was all to do with the national government, it’s just scandalous, it’s a joke what’s going on.”
