The earthquake erupted off the coast in Lancashire and caused disruption to homes late at night

Everything you need to know after Lancashire earthquake ‘shakes homes’ overnight:

  • A 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck England’s North West overnight. Lancashire locals awoken to shaking houses with British Geological Survey data indicating that the quake struck three kilometres under Lancashire at 11.23pm on Wednesday. The quake struck off the coast of Silverdale at 11.23pm, at a depth of 1.86 miles (3km).
  • BGS said that the tremor was experienced “across the South Lakes and Lancashire, mainly within 20 kilometres of the epicentre, including Lancashire, Kendal and Ulverston”. However, some people have claimed they could feel the quake from as far as London.
  • Dozens of people reported that they woke up to the feeling of their homes shaking. One Lancashire resident posted on social media that the earthquake “felt like an explosion and vibration coming from underground”. Another added that it was “so powerful to shake the whole house” and somebody else commented that it “sounded like bricks falling/the roof falling in.”
  • According to Volcano Discovery the closest larger town where the quake may have been felt is Preston, which is around 43km from the epicentre. There is currently no recorded damage as a result.
  • Despite there being around 200 to 300 earthquakes each year in the UK, detected by the BGS, only 20 to 30 of these are said to be felt by people. A few hundred smaller earthquakes are only recorded by sensitive instruments.
