An evil police officer investigated the 2007 case of Anastasia, 15, who had been strangled in a village and was a classmate of his own daughter – he steered the investigation away from himself

An evil former police detective assigned to investigate a schoolgirl’s rape and murder 18 years ago has been convicted of committing the crimes himself.

Alexey Torop, 62, took on the case in 2007 after the discovery of the body of Anastasia, 15, who had been strangled in a village in the Balagansky district of Russia’s Irkutsk region. The victim was a classmate of his own daughter.

He steered the rape and murder investigation away from himself and his accomplice Yevgeny Lats, 53, also then a police officer. Instead he framed a 25-year-old with previous sex convictions, who was held in custody for more than a year.

Yet insufficient evidence was found to secure a conviction and the case remained unsolved. Torop then left the police and became a lawyer but justice eventually caught up with him and unmasked the ex-cop as a paedophile killer.

A witness came forward to tell how he had seen Torop and Lats disposing of the tragic 15-year-old’s body. He had lured the schoolgirl – a classmate of his own daughter – into his car in 2007 under the pretence of offering her a lift home.

What followed was a brutal double rape that ended in her asphyxiation, with the girl’s body dumped in a vegetable patch. Torop was also convicted of preying on vulnerable clients and others – including minors – as a lawyer.

He faced over 30 counts of sexual exploitation and two further rape charges —one victim a woman seeking his counsel. Torop was ordered jailed for two decades in a maximum security penal colony. Lats was jailed for ten years.

There have been several instances of police officers committing heinous crimes, the most infamous in the UK being Wayne Couzens‘ murder of Sarah Everard. The off-duty Metropolitan Police officer kidnapped Sarah in South London before he drove her to Kent, where he raped and strangled her before burning her body and disposing of her remains in woodlands.
