He met his victim at a church group and he had been helping pay his bills
A man has been jailed after burgling the home of a 79-year-old church worker. Christopher Pearson, 38, met the victim when he visited a church for coffee and cake sessions.
In the past, the pensioner had helped Pearson pay his bills but on this occasion, Pearson pestered the victim to give him £20 by repeatedly messaging him. The pensioner said he would give him the cash when he returned home from London in a few days.
Pearson was impatient and sent a string of demanding messages to the victim. Pearson, of Eastfield Road, Peterborough, broke into the pensioner’s home in the Millfield area in October 2024.
Pearson cut his hand after smashing the back door glass and stole a TV, sound bar, laptop, and 150 Euros from the property. On the same day, he was reported to the police for stealing a bike from the city’s train station.
He had grabbed the door to the bike hub as some was leaving and wedged it open with his bike. He used snips to break the lock and cycled off with both bikes but was arrested shortly after.
Pearson originally denied the offences but in July, he pleaded guilty to burglary, theft of a pedal cycle, going equipped and failing to surrender to court. On January 8, he was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison at Peterborough Crown Court.
DC Megan Sims said: “Pearson broke into the home of a kind-hearted man who had regularly helped him out with his bills. It was a despicable breach of trust which disappointed the victim who knew Pearson well.”
