Fired Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore ‘terrorized’ his ex after losing job as he’s charged with home invasion, court hears
Fired University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore “terrorized” his ex-girlfriend after losing his job over an alleged “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member, prosecutors said in court Friday.
Moore, 39, has now been charged with three crimes, which include home invasion and stalking. He was arraigned on Friday after he was detained by police earlier this week. News of his arrest emerged around the same time the University of Michigan announced he had been fired for what was described as “an inappropriate relationship” with a staff member.
In court, prosecutors alleged the former Michigan Wolverines coach “terrorized” his former girlfriend after losing his job as Michigan’s head coach, according to the Associated Press. Prosecutors accused Moore of “unlawfully entering the dwelling of a victim with whom Mr. Moore had a dating relationship,” the AP reports.
Prosecutors described in court how Moore allegedly went to his girlfriend’s home on Wednesday night, grabbed knives out of her kitchen drawer and made threats, according to the Detroit Free Press.
The charges against Moore include one count of third-degree felony home invasion, one count of misdemeanor stalking related to a domestic relationship, and one count of misdemeanor breaking and entering, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Moore’s defense attorney, Joe Simon, said Friday that there’s “no evidence to suggest he’s a threat,” according to the AP. The Independent has contacted Simon for comment.
Few details were released before Moore’s arraignment. When asked about Moore’s arrest earlier this week, officials in Pittsfield Township, Michigan, released a statement indicating an individual was taken into custody in an “assault investigation” on Wednesday, NBC News reports. However, the statement did not name Moore.
University of Michigan President Domenico Grasso announced Moore’s firing in a statement on Thursday.
“Earlier this week, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics dismissed head football coach Sherrone Moore with cause for violating University policy by engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” Grasso said.
“When the findings of a University investigation into Coach Moore’s behavior were presented on Wednesday, we immediately terminated his employment. There is absolutely no tolerance for this conduct at the University of Michigan. None,” he added.
Moore was initially set to wrap his second season leading the Wolverines. He entered the role the year after the previous coach, Jim Harbaugh, led the team to a National Title. He previously served as offensive coordinator under Harbaugh, as well as interim head coach during Harbaugh’s suspension. Moore was also the first Black coach in the program’s history.
Moore is a father to three daughters and has been married to his wife since 2015.
Students at the University of Michigan were not surprised by Moore’s firing, according to MLive.
Sophomore Lena Reeves called the situation “pretty crazy,” but told the outlet she wasn’t shocked because “it’s happening a lot with people in high coaching positions.”
David Lightman, a senior, said that the accusations made against the Michigan Wolverine coach were “really disappointing,” but added that his firing was “not the most unexpected thing.”
“He was given a great opportunity to be our coach, and he definitely did not take advantage of that opportunity and disrespected the athletic department and the school,” he told MLive.
