Crews attended but sadly Mr Cherry died at the scene. Following a postmortem examination, it has been established that he died after being struck by a vehicle.

Following his death, Mr Cherry has been remembered as “a devoted father and grandfather” by his family.

A statement released through Police Scotland reads: “A devoted father and grandfather, he was known for his friendly nature, long walks with his dog Milo, and for helping others. A local man and retired bus driver, with a heart of gold and described by many as a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed by many.”

It is understood that the vehicle involved left the scene. The investigation is ongoing, but detectives say they are following a positive line of inquiry.

Officers are continuing to appeal to the public and urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or a vehicle driving dangerously in the surrounding area to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Graham Clarke said: “Our thoughts remain with William’s family and friends at this very difficult time, and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. We now know that William died as a result of being struck by a car, and I’d ask that anyone in the local area please think back to whether they witnessed a crash or a vehicle driving dangerously that evening.

“I’d also ask that people review their private CCTV and dash-cam footage to see if it has captured anything of significance that could assist with our investigation. Anyone with information who is yet to speak to officers, please approach local officers or call Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2461 of 5 December, 2025.

“If you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
