Five things to know about drink spiking as data shows low arrest numbers
Need to know
Dawn Brennan, Chief Executive of safety charity Wise Women has outlined five key steps people can take to avoid falling victim to drink spiking.
Five things you need to know about drink spiking
- Don’t leave you drink unattended at any time. Always make sure it is covered either with a lid or even a beermat when you are not drinking. Drink beer from a bottle rather than the glass as a bottle is harder for someone to spike or contaminate.
- Look out for your friends. Make sure you are aware of their circumstances and recognise if they are not feeling well, acting differently or their behaviour has changed. It could be that their drink has been spiked.
- Don’t accept drinks from strangers and know where you can go for help.. If you do think your drink has been spiked then contact a member of the bar staff.
- Realise that spiking doesn’t just happen when a drink is contaminated. It can also happen by a person being injected without their knowledge with a needle or syringe.
- Get more information generally about spiking and what it means. Keep yourself informed. Find out which bars or clubs provide tools to avoid spiking such as lids for drinks or testing strips for drugs.
