Flood alerts issued for Wales and there’s gales on the way for some areas

National Resources Wales has two alerts in place in Wales with more heavy rain and gales expected overnight

Two flood alerts are in place in Wales tonight. Natural Resources Wales says there is a risk of flooding on the rivers Wye and Monnow in Monmouthshire and people should be prepared. NRW said it is monitoring the situation and people should be prepared.

Monmouth was devastated by record floods in December with residents evacuated and businesses and homes ruined after Storm Claudia swept through.

The current NRW flood alert for the two rivers was issued on Friday night January 23 and remains in place on Saturday night January 24. NRW is warning that flooding of low lying land and roads is expected. River levels will be above normal. A second warning is for the River Lugg in Powys. NRW says rainfall is currently affecting this area. It will continue to monitor the situation with flooding of low-lying land and roads expected there too.

Elsewhere a stretch of the M4 was closed on January 24 due to flooding.One lane on the M4 eastbound from junction 43 A465 at Llandarcyto junction 42 A483 (Swansea East / Briton Ferry) closed just after 7.45pm, the traffic service Inrix reported.

Much of Wales is seeing heavy rainfall with more expected before it starts to get far colder in some areas to the north and west at the start of the week.

The Met Office said the weather will be staying unsettled with rain at times, heaviest in the south through tonight with gales possible in Gwynedd and Anglesey this evening, winds easing overnight. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Sunday January 25 will be a wet day for some with the most persistent rain probably in the south, with maximum temperatures of 7 °C.

The outlook for Monday to Wednesday is getting colder. There will be a frosty start for some on Monday. Turning windier with rain pushing eastwards later.

It is expected to be very wet and windy on Tuesday with gales and flooding likely in places turning brighter and colder going from Tuesday into Wednesday.
