Games Inbox: Would you rather Sony make a new portable or the PS6?
The Wednesday letters page asks how big a success Highguard has been so far, as one reader ponders whether you can have too much Leon S. Kennedy.

3 is more than 6
Saw an interesting statistic that 7% of PlayStation 5 owners also have a PlayStation Portal. Considering how much the Portal costs, and that it can only stream PlayStation games, and not play any itself, that is really high.
With all the talk of the PlayStation 6 being delayed I think there’s a real chance that Sony will go big on the handheld that’s meant to be coming. Given all the cost problems involved in making a new home console, for both companies and people, a portable makes far more sense to me.
It wouldn’t increase the cost of making games, it’s fully compatible with the current PlayStation 5, and if it’s popular enough you could even get into some Nintendo style dual screen use. I know I’d be vastly more interesting in a PSP 3 than I would be a PlayStation 6.

High risk
Interesting to see the launch of Highguard and how the devs now regret getting the end slot at The Game Awards, which I think would’ve cost them a fortune under normal circumstances. Who knows if they’ve missed their chance at being a hit but it’s in the top 100 for Steam and has a pretty good all-time peak of 97,249.

That’s not going to make it the next Fortnite or anything but it’s good enough that things could go either way, depending on what the updates are and if they bribe enough streamers to play (yes, streamers get paid to play games – especially the launch of Apex Legend, which is basically the same devs).
But I would agree with those saying that making a big budget video game is an ultra risky thing to do for a start-up. I would’ve thought starting small with a more indie style game would’ve been a lot more sensible. I mean, what would you rather end up making? Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 or Concord?
Kingstrike
GameCube only
I realise you can never tell with Nintendo, but I think Metroid Prime 2 being on Nintendo Switch Online is a clear sign that they’re not going to release the remaster and that, for a while at least, they’re done with Metroid Prime.
Metroid Prime 4 took ages, was really difficult to make, and it was a critical and commerical flop. I bet it cost a lot more to make than Metroid Dread, even though it didn’t sell as well. So my prediction is that they’ll just make another 2D game next and forget about the Prime series for a long while, possibly forever.
I wish it had turned out differently but Prime 4 is so bad and yet it ends pretty cleanly with not much in the way of loose ends. Besides, the story didn’t have any real connection with anything else anyway, so it can easily be ignored now, I feel.

Too little, too late
People have been saying it for years but it is long past time that Activision tried to make something other than Call Of Duty but I think they’ve left it too late. It sounds like this role-playing game has only recently started, so it’s going to be five years till it’s out and even then it’s only one game that may or may not be a hit.
I remember in the 2000s Activision used publish lots of different games and then it just slowly became less and less, until only Call Of Duty was left. You can see what the problem was. The suits wanted everything they made to be as big as COD and if it wasn’t (and you couldn’t make a new one every year) then it wasn’t worth bothering with.
That’s obviously stupid but it’s the decision Activision has made and the same logic is at most of the other big publishers too, to one degree or another. I won’t bother saying it’ll bite them on the ass sooner or later, because it already is.

PS: Who is even in charge of Activision anymore? Now that they got rid of Bobby Kotick? Just like with Sony, it seems the execs get more and more anonymous every year.
GC: Rob Kostich is the current president. He rarely does any press, but he was in charge of Call Of Duty for 10 years before he got the big job.
Correct amount
When is more Leon too much Leon? Leon S. Kennedy hasn’t been in a Resident Evil for sooo long! Leon S. Kennedy was in Resi 6 in 2012, Leon S. Kennedy was in Resi 2 remake in 2019, and Leon S. Kennedy was in Resi 4 remake in 2023!
Now, I love Leon as much as the next dudebro, certainly more than Gary, Charlene, Dave and Sandra* but, amongst other reasons this is why I’m happy to believe Code: Veronica is next for the ol’ remake-aroo
big boy bent
PS: Apart from our Leon, Claire Redfield is my joint favourite Resi protagonist.
Collector’s edition update
Hope all GC staff and readers are well. Just before Christmas I got my collector’s edition of Broken Sword: The Shadows Of The Templar Reforged, which is the remaster/remake of the first Broken Sword game which was funded on Kickstarter.
It includes the PlayStation 5 game with the latest updates, a USB Broken Sword memory stick, a George Stobbard figurine, a cloth manuscript with seal, a medium-sized 78 page colour manual, and a smaller 27 page colour manual inside a very nice box, which I think is magnetically sealed with a large slip case.
It’s all very high quality. When I got it just before Christmas I saw that people were selling it new on eBay for £300! It’s only worth £100 and I definitely won’t be selling mine. I bought it as I am a big fan of the games and ordinarily wouldn’t spend that much on a single game.
You also get your name included in the credits of the game for backing the Kickstarter. I am in the middle of playing other games, but I have played a little bit of the game and when you are actually in the game playing it, it looks amazing in 4K! I think it has all been redrawn for HD and 4K screens.
If you haven’t played it before and would like a game with a good story and puzzles I highly recommend it. If you haven’t played the first game since the ‘90s I highly recommend it as it is a massive upgrade. I played the original on my brother’s PC in the late ‘90s. I have included a couple of photos of the game and collectibles. When I got the game I thought the figurine was going to be as big as the box but as you can see in the photo it is a lot smaller than that! My mistake!
When I installed the game the other day I noticed that there is a 500MB update on PlayStation 5! So even though it has many updates on the disc it does not have this one, unfortunately. They wanted to have all the updates on the disc before they pressed the discs.

PS: If you wanted to register your interest for the second game’s collector’s edition, Broken Sword: The Smoking Mirror Reforged, then you can use this link on Kickstarter. In the first Kickstarter they had a cheaper digital-only version.
King gone
It’s refreshing to see the quality and range of Ubisoft’s output recognised. I’m probably being foolish, but I would be happy to see versions of their older games simply playable on modern consoles, the remaster/remake business is just a distraction when games already look fine really.

GC: We’re not sure what you mean exactly, but most of the games on our list are available on current and last gen consoles. The only four, out of 19, that aren’t on the PlayStation Store are Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, King Kong: The Official Game Of The Movie (no doubt because they no longer have the licence), Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. The latter two are on Steam though.
Triple dippin’
I’ll keep my thoughts positive and hopeful, but it’s quite the news that Rockstar Games are quite possibly delaying a physical disc release, of Grand Theft Auto 6, so as to prevent leaks. I could say this is catered towards preventing story spoilers, but the game was already leaked once before. A massive leak that systematically created a ripple effect.
It was pulled off by an autistic 16-year-old with an Amazon Fire Stick. I sincerely doubt Rockstar’s noble intentions. The move is to sell us the game multiple times. First digitally. Then a disc. Then PC and, of course, a remaster for the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox. To essentially milk the game for all it’s worth. So I don’t buy that fable.
Of course, Take-Two will milk the most anticipated video game of all time, under a seemingly justifiable cause of reason. Who wouldn’t, truthfully? Naughty Dog have mastered the art with The Last Of Us after all. Art is always inspirational.

PS: Many thanks for the lovely preview of Resident Evil Requiem. The positive feedback is a step in the right direction. I truly hope this ends up working as a continuation of the franchise and it remains a horror-centric instalment.
GC: The GTA 6 hack was big news, but it provided very little important information about the game. We still know virtually nothing about the story even now.

I had no idea that stealing virtual items wasn’t illegal up till now. I’m kicking myself I didn’t get in some free thievery while I had the chance.

For those that are interested, Limited Run Games are doing a compilation of old Ren & Stimpy games. I’ll be honest, I didn’t realise there were so many, so I’m interested in this.
