Gary Neville was on commentary for Sky Sports when he gave a theory about Manchester United’s clash with Newcastle

Gary Neville has given a theory on a potential tactic used by Newcastle players during the clash with Manchester United. The Reds were taking on the Magpies in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Patrick Dorgu gave United the lead going into the half-time interval with a sublime volley that beat Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

United started the game on the front foot, with Newcastle’s players struggling to maintain the same pace as their opponents.

It was before Dorgu opened the scoring for United that Ramsdale went to ground with a suspected injury that led to a stoppage in play for the Newcastle goalkeeper.

However, Neville had his own view, claiming that he believes Ramsdale went to ground after an instruction from Lewis Hall, which came from Magpies boss Eddie Howe.

Luke Shaw was waiting to take a throw-in for United in the eighth minute at the time of the stoppage, and Neville, who was working as a commentator for Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, gave his theory as to the true reason behind the break in play.

“I am going to be a little bit cynical, I might be proven completely wrong but I think Eddie Howe told Lewis Hall to tell [Aaron] Ramsdale to go down,” Neville.

“I think there’s a message gone on and I think they are changing on the back of what United are doing.

“Look at what Lewis Hall is doing. I think Eddie Howe said ‘stop the game’.

“I might be cynical but look at Lewis Hall, he has turned into a coach all of a sudden.

“He might have said to the goalkeeper, ‘Stay down’ or ‘Get down and let’s just change things a little bit’.”
