A woman and her partner decided to introduce their beloved golden retriever to his new pet “brother” and he had “big feelings” after meeting the eight week old new addition
A golden retriever experienced “big feelings” when meeting his new pet sibling. Getting the introduction right between an existing pet and a new puppy can be challenging, as some dogs may become overly protective of their territory and personal space.
With millions of people worldwide welcoming dogs into their homes, the Dogs Trust advises those thinking about a second pet to ensure vaccinations are up to date before any introductions occur to keep both animals “safe and well”. The charity also recommends consulting a “qualified dog behaviourist or trainer before you start looking for a dog or puppy”.
The organisation explains: “Dogs get a lot of information about the world from their noses. You can introduce your dogs before they meet using scent swapping. One way of doing this is by taking a blanket, toy or something else with the dogs’ scent on it from each dog.”
The charity suggests arranging a meeting on neutral territory so they can become acquainted with each other without stress or territorial instincts coming into play.
A woman called Chelsey filmed the “beautiful moment” when her and her partner’s three and a half year old golden retriever Pecco met their eight week old “goldador” – a mix between a golden retriever and a Labrador – puppy named Bucky.
In the clip, which was posted to TikTok, Chelsey can be seen cradling Bucky while Pecco draws near carrying a large toy in his mouth. He drops the toy and briefly sniffs Bucky while Chelsey can be heard comforting him.
She says: “He’s your brother.”
Pecco picks the toy up again and goes for a little wander near a large crate. The dog then comes back to Chelsey and Bucky.
Chelsey tells her partner: “He’s really confused.”
Bucky looked a little apprehensive, keen to stay in Chelsey’s lap.
Over the top of the footage, the couple added text which reads: “when our three year old golden retriever meets our eight week old goldador”.
In the caption, they simply added: “Meeting his brother”. The video amassed 2.6 million views and people flocked to the comments to share their thoughts.
In reference to Chelsey’s partner seen filming the exchange from another angle, one TikTok user commented: “Proud dad”.
Another referenced Pecco’s toy and said: “He brought gifts”. A third said: “Carrying around the toy like ‘No.. I’m the baby!’”
A fourth shared: “We have a golden and Goldador, they are best friends”. Someone else commented: “Pecco was having some big feelings!”
One TikTok user said: “This is so sweet I can’t cope” while another agreed: “Oh bless them this is too cute”. Another said: “It feels like he wanted to get a teddy for the puppy”.
In a follow-up video, Chelsey and her partner shared a compilation of clips which show Pecco and Bucky are now firm friends, regularly playing together and enjoying each other’s company.
In the caption, the couple said: “get the second dog – best decision we made”. This video has so far gained more than 10.9 million views.
