Two people have been taken into custody by police in Sydney following the incident at Bondi Beach.
A gunman has reportedly opened fire at Bondi Beach with multiple casualties. Local media reports police in Australia are responding to a ‘developing incident’ at the tourist hotspot in Sydney.
New South Wales Police Force confirmed two people have been taken into custody following the incident but they are still urging people to avoid the area. Dozens of emergency vehicles, including police units and ambulances, have flooded the Bondi area with panicked crowds seen gathering on a nearby street, reports the Mirror.
A spokesperson for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “We are aware of an active security situation in Bondi. We urge people in the vicinity to follow information from NSW Police”.
In statements shared on X, New South Wales Police Force said: “Police are responding to a developing incident at Bondi Beach and are urging the public to AVOID the area. Anyone at the scene should take shelter. Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand.
“Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area. Please obey ALL police directions. Do not cross police lines.”
New South Wales Police Force also said there have been no reported incidents in the nearby Dover Heights area of the city amid unconfirmed rumours.
