Mark McCarthy threatened another man with a ‘large knife’ in the middle of the street prompting armed police to be called
A man has been jailed for brandishing a knife during a street row in the Welsh capital. Firearms officers were called to Brook Street in the Riverside area of Cardiff at around 8pm on Sunday, August 10, 2024, after receiving a 999-report about a disturbance in the street.
Mark McCarthy, 33, from Taffs Well, threatened another man with a large knife in the middle of the street before he fled the area. However he was traced by police and arrested within 30 minutes of the 999 call being made.
McCarthy, of Rhiw’r Ddar, Taffs Well, pleaded guilty to threatening with a bladed article following the incident. Don’t miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here
He was sentenced to one year and six weeks in prison at Cardiff Crown Court.
Detective constable Eleri Phillips of South Wales Police said she hoped the sentence sent a message that people will be held accountable for using weapons.
Speaking after the sentencing she said: “Knife crime remains a top priority for South Wales Police and we are committed to protecting our communities by tackling those who carry weapons and pose such serious risks to public safety.
“I’m pleased to see this sentence ordered today and hope it sends a message to McCarthy and others that we will ensure they are held accountable for using weapons to intimidate others.”
