How to access NHS services during December strike action
In Greater Manchester, resident doctors will stage industrial action from 7am on Wednesday, December 17, until 7am on Monday, December 22.
Health and care teams plan to keep as many services running as possible, but hospitals and GP practices are expected to be busier than usual due to reduced staffing, seasonal illnesses, and planned annual leave.
Patients are advised to continue attending appointments unless contacted by their GP or hospital.
Some planned procedures may be postponed to prioritise urgent care.
NHS Greater Manchester has issued the following advice on where to seek help during the strike:
-
For dental pain, the Greater Manchester Dental Helpline can be reached on 0333 332 3800 from 8am to 10pm daily.
-
In an emergency, call 999 or go to A&E for life-threatening conditions such as chest pain, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, or stroke symptoms.
-
For urgent but non-emergency needs, use NHS 111 online, by phone, or via the NHS App.
-
Pharmacists can treat conditions like earache (ages one to 17), sore throats (ages five and above), and urinary tract infections (ages 16 to 64) without a GP appointment.
-
For urgent eye care, contact your optician first. If they do not offer the service, search for Greater Manchester’s Urgent Eye Care Service.
Members of the public are also encouraged to support those recently discharged from hospital who may need help with prescriptions, food, or managing minor illnesses.
People eligible for winter vaccines, including flu and Covid boosters, are advised to get vaccinated to reduce the risk of illness and protect others.
Dr Francis Andrews, consultant in emergency medicine and medical director at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We know industrial action can be worrying, particularly with Christmas approaching.
“NHS teams are working hard to maintain as many services as possible, but hospitals and GP practices will be busier than usual.
“Please plan ahead for prescriptions, use pharmacies, dental and urgent eye services where possible, and support loved ones who are ready to leave hospital so care can be provided safely to those who need it most.
“Booking your flu vaccination is another way to protect yourself and others during winter.
“We thank everyone for their patience, understanding, and kindness towards NHS staff during this period.”
