Having fresh fruit in the house is a staple. From smoothies at breakfast, to snacks between meals or a delicious dessert, fruit can do it all.
However, a lot of people come in from the supermarket and just throw all their fruit in the fridge or the fruit bowl. If you’re guilty of this common habit, then you might have noticed that some of your fruit doesn’t last as long as it should.
Justin Carptenter, a home care expert and owner of Modern Maids, has shared his top tips for the best way to store fruits to ensure they stay fresh and tasty for longer, reports the Express.
He said: “One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to storing fruits is that they tend to store them all in the refrigerator.
“While some fruits may last longer when stored in the refrigerator, some may deteriorate when stored this way.”
Some fruits do better in the fridge. Things like berries, grapes, apples and citrus fruits tend to last longer when stored in the fridge.
This is because cold temperatures work to slow the rate of mould growth and moisture loss, which in turn slows the rate of spoiling.
Other fruits will suffer if refrigerated. Things like bananas, unripe avocados, stone fruits such as peaches and plums, mangoes and pineapples.
Refrigeration slows down the ripening process and can reduce flavour as well as making them mushy or mealy.
Justin said: “Once the fruits are ripe, the refrigerator can be used to slow down the ripening process. Why storage matters beyond freshness .
“The importance of proper storage of fruits extends beyond the taste of the fruits to the cleanliness of the kitchen.”
Leaving fresh fruit out in the kitchen for extended periods creates an ideal environment for pests to arrive and feed. Storing them properly reduces this risk and helps maintain a cleaner kitchen overall.
Maintaining a clean and safe kitchen also requires understanding correct fridge storage practices.
Salah Sun, the head of product management at Beko, explained: “Keep foods like cooked meats and dairy on the top shelf, raw meat at the bottom, and fresh produce in the crisper drawers to help it last longer.
“Label leftovers with the date you stored them, so you know how long you have to use them.
“Putting the newest food at the back and older items at the front means you’re much less likely to find spoiled produce weeks later.”.
