No this is no early April Fools’ Day trick or a prank – it’s real
Aldi announced the launch of the “world’s first lickable pigs in blankets wrapping paper” and of course, we had to get our hands on it. I had a roll of it sent to my door – and I have a lot to say.
Firstly, it is not an April Fools’ joke posted far too early. In fact, the retailer knows that the mini sausages wrapped in bacon are a Christmas cult classic. So why not combine two festive essentials together?
Its ‘latest innovation is bound to tantalise taste buds’ – and it did mine. As soon as I opened it, I was impressed by the design. It is bold, bright, fun and what Christmas should be – and I do not think I’ve seen food on wrapping paper before, bar sweet treats like candy canes and Christmas pudding.
Aldi UK took inspiration from its Specially Selected Double Wrapped Pigs in Blankets. It describes: “It captures the smoky, savoury flavour and smell of the festive treat, with stickers that peel back to reveal a truly unique, lickable experience.
“The novelty wrapping paper not only tastes and smells like delicious Pigs in Blankets, it also looks charming on presents with its pastel pink design, festive holly and snowflake patterns.”

The flavour was so similar to the crispy bacon you get with pigs in blankets. It is also similar to some bacon crisps. Oddly, it was so good (and weird) it made me salivate. And now I crave a whole bowl of pigs in blankets with some gravy.
What I think I will do is cut out each patch you can lick and pop them on this year’s gifts to family and friends. Make their Christmas morning just that bit cooler.
How to get the lickable wrapping paper
A roll of limited-edition wrapping paper can be claimed from November 24 via an exclusive shopper competition. To enter, entrants simply need to email wrappingpaper@aldi.co.uk with their full name.
