She took a photo but only later realised what it was
It was just an ordinary meal. And then Rach Myres realised what had been staring her in the face.
The stunned mum spotted the face of Santa peeping back at her from her plate. Rach’s jaw dropped when a friend pointed out St Nick’s face peeping back from her starter of ‘neeps and tatties’.
Striking images show a clearly-defined head, eyes, nose, chin, moustache, beard and trademark flowing locks in the ‘tatties’ or mash. The 41-year-old bar manager shared the funny snap of the baked potato on Facebook where it racked up 500 likes, shares and comments.
Rach, from Leyland, Lancashire, said: “It was a bit odd seeing Santa staring out from my dinner plate – [even more] because then I realised that I’d eaten him. You can see the classic features – a head, two closed eyes, a nose, mouth and a flowing beard. The mash spilling out to the side looks like long hair.
“I’d gone round to my friend’s house, it was my first time trying neeps and tatties – mashed swede and potato. There were eight of us at dinner. I thought it was lovely and I actually took one home with me as well.
“I didn’t realise the face [at first]. I took a photo quickly before eating it to put on my Snapchat. It was only after I’d eaten it and I showed someone the picture they said ‘oh my, God look at it’. It was then I saw the face.”
Rach shared the photo online where eagle-eyed viewers agreed it looked like Santa, but other beardy contenders included Jesus and Gandalf – while others were confused by what neeps and tatties are.
The mum of four said she now keeps an eye out for other famous faces in her food. Rach said: “I didn’t look in my meals for faces beforehand but now I am. It wouldn’t put me off eating it if I did in future. I’d have this meal again.”
Rach’s Facebook post reads: “Just got pointed out my neeps and tatties resemble someone.” One person commented: “What Mrs. Claus sees when the alarm clock goes off.”
Another wrote: “Jeebus!!” One added: “Gandalf!”
One confused social media user wrote: “I thought neeps and tatties was a euphemism for something else. My mind is clearly in the gutter.”
