Christmas romantic comedy Love Actually features a glittering ensemble cast and is usually among people’s favourite festive films, however one woman has shared why she thinks the film is ‘thoughtless’

Many of us will be sitting down to watch Christmas films now the festive season has begun, and a favourite for a lot of people has to be Love Actually. The 2003 Christmas romantic comedy written and directed by Richard Curtis features a glittering ensemble cast, with big names such as Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman.

The movie looks into different aspects of love as portrayed through 10 separate stories involving a variety of characters, many of whom are interlinked as the plot continues. The film starts six weeks before Christmas and is played out in a weekly countdown until the big day, followed by an epilogue that takes place in the New Year.

Despite it being up there as one of the best Christmas films for a lot of people, one woman who has only watched the movie in recent years has scalded it, branding it ‘thoughtless’.

The woman, named Oceana, took to TikTok to share her experience of watching the film.

She told her 30,000 followers: “If you are a person who loves the movie Love Actually, we cannot be friends.

“If you love this movie, it means that you are shallow and thoughtless, that you got sucked up in the Christmassy vibe and music and you missed the fact that the rest of the movie consists of… where do we start?”

Oceana first talked about Colin Firth’s character who she says falls in love with a girl who is “less than half of his age”. She says: “He puts her on the spot by asking her to marry him in front of an entire restaurant full of strangers and they’ve never actually had a conversation because she doesn’t speak English.”

She also points out that Alan Rickman’s character also has an affair with a girl “half his age too” from his work and that it’s again another similar situation for the Prime Minister character, played by Hugh Grant.

“He dates a woman who works for him, who again is much, much younger than himself, after a conversation about whether she’s fat or just chubby,” she says.

Oceana also mention Laura Linney’s character, saying she falls for a guy who has ‘no interest in her’ and ‘doesn’t show any personality’.

While last, she mentions the man ‘who’s rude to Keira Knightley’s character’. “Again, he’s about twice her age,” she says. “Tells her with a bunch of cue cards on Christmas Eve that he actually loves her, while he’s best friend who she’s married to is sat 10 feet away.

“Now that right there is the equivalent of boys who pull your pigtails actually like you because he is rude to her throughout the whole movie.”

Concluding her view, Oceana says: “So, if you’re one of those people who claims to love the movie, and you want to be my friend. I request you watch the movie again and come back to me and tell me how you feel about it now.

“And yes I am known for ruining things for people.”

Many people seemed to agree with Oceana, as one person said: “It gets so hyped, but it is so terrible omg.”

While another added: “It’s a star-studded cast, but I find the movie itself super depressing.”

A third chimed in: “Just watched it for the first time and I actually hated it!”

However, despite this, some people admitted they couldn’t hate the film, as one person said: “I know it’s so bad but I can’t be reasonable with Kiera Knightley involved.”

While another added: “I think I like it because it’s an honest portrayal of how terrible these people are.”
