In years gone by, you wouldn’t have expected to shell out more than a fiver for a festive tin of chocolates. Yet, I was taken aback by the price of Cadbury Roses and Heroes during my recent supermarket visit
It’s the season when many of us indulge in a tin of chocolates for the lounge, to share with friends, family and guests or simply to enjoy ourselves. However, if you’re planning on doing so, you might want to start saving up.
In years gone by, you wouldn’t have expected to shell out more than a fiver for a festive tin of chocolates. Yet, I was taken aback by the price of Cadbury Roses and Heroes during my recent supermarket visit. On a trip to my local Sainsbury’s, I contemplated treating myself to a tin of sweets to nibble on while enjoying the next Christmas film on my list.
To my dismay, I discovered that both 700g tins of Cadbury Roses and Heroes were retailing for a whopping £16.50.
The only silver lining is that these chocolate tins can be purchased for £10 if you possess a Nectar card, although I still find this rather pricey.
Fortunately, Sainsbury’s offers some more affordable alternatives for those seeking Christmas chocolate tins.
According to their website, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Mixed Chunks Tin (60g) is priced at £9.59, or £6.50 with a Nectar card. Meanwhile, a 750g tin of Quality Street is available for £13, or £8.50 with a Nectar card.
You can also opt for a 500-550g tub of Celebrations, Heroes, or Quality Street for just £6 each.
For those hunting for a bargain, Tesco may be the place to go. Currently, the same 500-550g tubs of Celebrations and Quality Street are priced at just £3.95 with a Clubcard, and £4.50 without one.
Meanwhile, the tub of Heroes priced at £16.50/£10 in Sainsbury’s is available for only £7.50 with a Clubcard in Tesco, although its regular price is £15.
This discovery follows the recent revelation of the most affordable supermarkets for Christmas chocolate tubs.
The survey found that standard tubs of Heroes, Roses and Celebrations are all currently priced under £5 at Asda, while Morrisons is selling them for £7 (or £5.50 with a Morrisons More Card).
As mentioned earlier, Celebrations and Quality Street are just £3.95 with a Clubcard at Tesco, while Roses and Heroes are £7 (or £5.25 with a Clubcard). In addition, Aldi and Lidl are both offering tubs for under £5 as well.
Neither Marks and Spencer nor Waitrose carry the traditional tubs on their websites, but both retailers do offer smaller pouch-sized packets and alternative festive chocolates – with prices ranging approximately between £4 and £10.
