A police investigation is underway after a kitchen knife was found in the playground of a Scots primary school.
Officers were called to Dunbar Primary School in East Lothian following the shocking discovery on Monday, January 19. The blade, described as a “small kitchen knife”, was found at the school’s John Muir Campus, which teaches children from nursery to Primary 3.
A police search was then conducted of the grounds, reports our sister title, Edinburgh Live.
Cops say inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.55am on Monday, 19 January, 2026, we received a report of a knife found at a premises on Lammermuir Crescent, Dunbar. Officers attended, and the knife was recovered. No injuries were reported.
“The area was searched, and no one was traced. Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said: “On Monday, a small kitchen knife was found in the playground of Dunbar Primary School’s John Muir campus. The item was discovered and then promptly removed and the area was checked thoroughly. The matter has been reported to the police and we are working to investigate.
“At no time were pupils placed in danger and normal playground use resumed once staff were satisfied the area was safe. The school continues to carry out regular checks of all play areas and highlight to pupils about the importance of reporting anything of concern to an adult straight away.
“Separately and unrelated to the discovery of the knife on Monday, a police vehicle has been at the school on Tuesday morning as part of a learning project for P1 pupils.”
