Larne RNLI crews responded after the fishing boat crew reported being in danger of crashing into rocks

Larne RNLI came to the rescue of three crew members stranded on a malfunctioning fishing boat.

The volunteer team was asked to launch their all-weather lifeboat, Dr John McSparran, at 12.03pm on Monday December 29 by HM Coastguard following a distress call from a crew member on the boat who reported that they had broken down and were at risk of being swept against the rocks near the Maidens Lighthouse. Coxswain Jack Healy, Mechanic Derek Rea, Navigator Willie Evans and crew members Chris Dorman, Barry Kirkpatrick and Gary Hanna promptly headed towards the last known location of the distressed vessel.

Given the urgency of the situation, the crew had the salvage pump and the XP-class lifeboat prepared for launch, with two crew members donned in dry suits.

The weather conditions at the time were favourable, with an easterly breeze and calm seas.

The stranded crew members were found approximately eight nautical miles northeast of Larne, in shallow waters near the West Maiden Lighthouse. Fortunately, a passing fishing vessel was already on the scene, providing assistance and keeping the casualty boat away from the rocks.

Upon arrival at the scene, the Coxswain evaluated the circumstances. It was determined that all crew members were unharmed and that the cause of the breakdown was engine failure.

After confirming that everyone aboard was safe and conducting an on-site assessment, the Coxswain concluded that the most necessary and secure approach was to establish a tow line and bring the vessel to the safety of Ballylumford harbour.

The all-weather lifeboat set up the tow line, and the craft was brought to the entrance of the Port of Larne where the tow line was transferred to the inshore lifeboat. With help from the inshore D class lifeboat Terry commanded by Scott Leitch, alongside Shea McFerran and Phil Ford-Hutchinson on board, the vessel was safely returned to Ballylumford harbour.

Following the callout, Larne RNLI Coxswain Jack Healy commented: “We would like to wish the crew well. The casualties were wearing the correct safety equipment and had the means to contact the Coastguard. They did the right thing when they realised that they had broken down.

“We would also like to pass on our thanks to the passing fishing vessel for their assistance today.

“We would encourage anyone planning a trip to sea to check their vessels and ensure engines are well-maintained. When going out, always carry adequate tools and spares and ensure you have enough fuel for your journey. If you do get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.”
