A houseboat has been left to collapse into the River Cam since the barge’s owner died in 2023.
An update has been provided on a collapsing houseboat in the River Cam after news that a lock on the river is set to reopen. The barge outside Jesus Green Lido has been gradually collapsing into the river for months.
It has been left deserted since the owner died in 2023. Since then, it has been left in disrepair with a window frame and panes falling into the water some time between July and early December.
In July, Cambridge City Council said that the closure of Baits Bite Lock, which closed in 2024 due to safety concerns, meant there was no way the barge could be removed. The council also told CambridgeshireLive at the start of December that “options remain limited” in removing the deteriorating barge.
On December 5, the Conservators of the River Cam said it was hoped the lock would reopen after an 18-month closure in the week commencing December 19. Cambridge City Council has provided an update on the removal of the houseboat.
A Cambridge City Council spokesperson said: “The removal is a complex process that must be carefully managed to ensure public safety, and we are seeking expert advice to support this. We can only confirm contractor availability once the lock has reopened, so we are unable to provide a further update until then.”
