Life expectancy ‘lottery’ as people in some places expected to live 10 years longer than others

There is also a difference in life expectancy between women and men, with women expected to live for longer on average

Where you live in the UK can determine how long you’ll live. More than 10 years separates the average life expectancy between different parts of the country.

Boys born in Blackpool last year have a life expectancy of 73.9 years, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Boys born in Hart, Hampshire, meanwhile, have a life expectancy of 84.6 years. That’s a difference of 10.7 years, the largest life expectancy gap in the UK.

For girls, the lowest life expectancy is in Glasgow at 78.9 years, while the highest is 87.7 years in Kensington and Chelsea. That’s a gap of 8.8 years. The figures highlight a strong regional divide when it comes to life expectancy.

The 10 local areas with the highest life expectancy at birth, for both males and females, were all in the south of England. The 10 local areas with the lowest life expectancy were concentrated in the north of England and in Scotland.

Scotland has the lowest life expectancies of any region of the UK. Males born in Scotland have a life expectancy of 77.4 years from birth, while females have one of 81.3 years. In the North East of England, newborn males in 2024 have a life expectancy of 78.1 years, while for females it’s 81.9 years.

In the North West males have a life expectancy of 78.4 years and females 82.2 years. In Wales the average for males is 78.3 years and 82.4 years for girls, while in Northern Ireland it’s 78.3 years and 82.5 years for boys and girls respectively, and in Yorkshire and The Humber it’s 78.5 years and 82.6 years.

The highest life expectancies are in the South East and London. London has the highest average for females at 85.0 years (80.8 years for males), while the South East tops the list for males at 80.9 years (84.7 years for females).
