‘Right, let me tell you,’ said Vicky McClure as she told Welsh husband Jonny Owen what’s what when it came to her next big acting job

She’s an award-winning actress known for her ground-breaking performances in films and shows like This is England, Line of Duty and Trigger Point. She’s also a proud daughter of Nottingham, and creator of culture-making daytime club, Day Fever, as well as the ground-breaking Dementia Choir.

With all these stellar achievements under her belt you might think she ticked all her boxes and would like a sit down with a lovely cup of tea.

But there’s one thing still on her bucket list and it relates to her being a long-time ‘honorary Welsh’, as dubbed by her Merthyr Tydfil-born husband, filmmaker and presenter, Jonny Owen. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

The pair’s production company has already sponsored his local team, The Martyrs, and Vicky even spoke a little Welsh when she appeared on S4C’s Heno.

The couple also have spent many festive seasons in Merthyr with the Notts star loving a local kebab shop tea on Boxing Day, 2023.

Now the 42-year-old actor has stated that she wants her next role to be filmed in Wales, maybe even a Welsh character. Jonny asked his other half on their BBC Radio Wales show, “do you feel like an honorary Welsh woman now?”

Taking a comedic stern tone, Vicky said: “Let me tell you now right, no, Jonathan, listen, I’m not joking.

“I’m ready for my next role in Wales. If anybody’s got anything going let me know.” She added the important point, “obviously after Line of Duty.”

Jonny teased: “The news is out now, Vicky wants to play somebody Welsh.”

The BAFTA-winner added: “I would love to play someone Welsh. I love Wales, I love the valleys, I love Merthyr, I love Merthyr Town FC. We’ve been here all weekend and it’s just been delightful as always.”

Getting serious, the star, who will return to Line of Duty as Kate Fleming when production gets going this year, added: “It’s down to earth people. Real people. I don’t know what it is, there’s something in the water innit.
