Lionesses purr as Georgia Stanway scores a hat-trick but woeful China make it a tough watch
This was the first time Wiegman had been forced to play a back four without one of Leah Williamson, Alex Greenwood, Jess Carter or Millie Bright. Williamson and Greenwood are both injured while Carter has been given extra rest after playing in the National Women’s Soccer League final in the United States. Bright, meanwhile, retired from international football last month. But England’s back four of Lucy Bronze, Maya Le Tissier, Esme Morgan and Niamh Charles were barely threatened. Goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, who was making her debut, barely touched the ball.
Wiegman could perhaps have been more experimental with her substitutes, with the uncapped Freya Godfrey and Anouk Denton left on the bench. The England manager will likely play a more fringe team on Tuesday when her side take on Ghana, which may prove to be a tougher test than China. Ghana, who beat Aston Villa in a behind-closed-doors friendly this week, finished third in the Africa Cup of Nations this summer and will offer a more physical test. Perhaps Wiegman may learn more about her team in that game than she did at Wembley on Saturday night.
