The reason he lost control ‘will never be known’

A 34-year-old motorcyclist died of multiple injuries after he lost control of his bike along a Cambridgeshire road, an inquest has heard. Luke Bromilow, 34, from Uckfield in East Sussex, died after a crash at around 2pm on May 30, 2025 at Branch Bank, between Littleport and Queen Adelaide.

Luke was riding a red Triumph motorbike, which collided with a Volkswagen Transporter van. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Luke was sadly declared dead at the scene. An inquest was held today (Wednesday, January 7) at Lawrence Court in Huntingdon into Luke’s death.

The inquest was led by Coroner Simon Milburn, with Luke’s family present. A post-mortem was carried out by consultant pathologist Dr John Grant. The inquest heard that Luke’s medical cause of death was multiple injuries to his chest and left forearm, with a CT scan showing blunt trauma to his chest. There was also an injury to his shoulder and left thigh.

Coroner Milburn said that Luke was travelling along the “northbound of Branch Bank” and he was “seen to be overtaking cars”. He then travelled along a bend onto a bridge along the road and “lost control”. As a result, the bike “slid onto its near side” and Luke slid off.

This led the bike to roll into the southbound side of the road and as a result, the driver of the Volkswagen Transporter van collided with Luke and the bike. Coroner Milburn said the driver of the van stopped “quickly” at the scene.

Several witness statements were read out to the court, and they provided varying accounts. Some described seeing Luke overtake them on the road, but driving in a “perfectly sensible” and “safe” manner. While some describe Luke as riding “dangerously”, as well as driving with no hands on his handle bars.

One witness provided dashcam footage, which was viewed by Coroner Milburn. Coroner Milburn told the court that he believed Luke was driving in an “appropriate manner”, which was “clear” on the dashcam footage.

A police officer tested riding a motorbike in the area of the crash., riding around the bend of where the crash happened at around 40mph. The officer in his report said this speed could “unsettle” a motorcyclist. Coroner Milburn said that from this report, it was “unclear” where Luke may have lost control of his bike, but a number of possibilities were drawn up. Coroner Milburn told the court that he was unable to determine a cause based on the “balance of probabilities”.

Before concluding the inquest, Coroner Milburn said there was a “loss of control” when Luke drove onto the bridge, but the “reason for that remains unclear and will never be known”. Coroner Milburn concluded that Luke died of multiple injuries as a result of a road traffic collision. The coroner offered his condolences to Luke’s family at this “very sad” time.

After his death, Luke’s family paid tribute to him. They described him as a “loving son” and said he would be “sadly missed”. They added: “In loving memory of Luke, who will be sadly missed. A loving son, brother and so much more to so many people. Forever on a motorbike, he will be deeply missed by all his family and friends.”
