M6 near Knutsford shut following 'serious incident'


The M6 in Cheshire has been shut in both directions near Knutsford following the “serious incident”.

National Highways said that traffic is being diverted through the exit and entry slip roads at J19.

The M6 is closed northbound between J19 (Tabley, Knutsford) and J20 (Lymm) due to a serious collision involving a car and pedestrian which occurred shortly before 9am this morning.

The southbound carriageway is closed at J19, traffic is being diverted via the exit and entry slip roads. This is known as an ‘up and over’ closure. 

Emergency services including Cheshire Police, the North West Ambulance Service attended. North West Air Ambulance landed in an adjacent field to J19 roundabout. 

National Highways Traffic Officers are also providing assistance with traffic management.

Cheshire Police will be carrying out investigation work, therefore the closure is expected to be protracted and in place for several hours today.

Diversion Route

Diverted traffic should follow the solid square diversion symbol:

  • Leave M6 NB at Jct 19.
  • At M6 Jct 19/A556 Rbt, take third exit onto A556 NB and follow for 7.3km.
  • At A556/A56 Bowden Rbt, take forth exit and follow the link road from A556 Boudon Rbt to A556 Sb for 0.2km. 
  • At A556/M56 Jct 8 Jct, turn onto M56 Jct 8 WB entry slip road and follow M56 WB for 8.5km. 
  • Leave M56 WB at Jct 9 to rejoin route on the M6 NB.

A spokesman for National Highways said; “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.
