A man in his 20s has tragically died while in police custody in Torquay, the force has confirmed.
A man has passed away while in police custody, the force in Devon has confirmed.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the shocking death of a 28-year-old man earlier this month, reports Devon Live. The force stated today (Friday, January 23) that the man was arrested in Torquay in the early hours of January 15.
He was taken to Torquay Custody Centre and became “unwell“. The man was given emergency treatment and transferred to Torbay District Hospital by ambulance.
Sadly he was later pronounced deceased. His next of kin have been informed.
The police statement reads: “Devon and Cornwall Police has made a referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the death of a 28-year-old man in Torquay on Thursday, 15 January. The man was arrested in Torquay in the early hours of 15 January and was taken to Torquay Custody Centre.
“He became unwell while in a custody cell and was given emergency medical treatment before being taken to Torbay District Hospital by ambulance. Sadly, he was later pronounced deceased.
“The man’s next-of-kin have been informed. The Force made a mandatory referral and is cooperating fully with an independent IOPC investigation.”
