Man charged with attempted murder after Newcastle ‘assault’
Ross Clancy is set to appear before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday, November 25) following an incident on Durham Street in Newcastle on Friday.
The 39-year-old, of Dunholme Road, Newcastle, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, one count of burglary and one count of theft of a vehicle.
Emergency services were called to the property at around 6.45pm on November 21 after a man and woman in their 60s were seriously injured.
The woman remains fighting for her life in hospital with severe head injuries while the man is in a stable condition. Both victims’ next of kin have been informed.
A cordon was put in place at the scene and officers remained in the area over the weekend to carry out inquiries and offer reassurance to nearby residents.
Northumbria Police has arrested eight people in connection with the probe so far, with the seven others released on police bail pending further enquiries.
This includes four men, two aged in their 20s, one in his 30s, and one in his 40s, all arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
A man, aged in his 50s, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder and two men, one aged in his 40s and one in his 60s, both were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton said: “Our thoughts very much remain with the victims of this incident and their families at this difficult time and we will offer them any support we can.
“Our investigation is ongoing and we would continue to encourage anyone with information who has not yet come forward to do so.
“Now that a man has been charged to appear in court, we would ask that the public avoid speculation – both online and in the community – and respect the ongoing legal process.”
Officers remain keen to hear from anyone with information related to a report of a stolen vehicle connected to the investigation to come forward.
The red Renault Twingo car is believed to have been parked in the West End of Newcastle sometime between 6.30pm and 8pm on Friday, before it was located in the Longbenton area of North Tyneside on Saturday morning.
