Man dies after being struck by van on Sawmills Lane, Brandon

Men identified after shoplifting incident in Bishop Auckland

Paul Smith is said to have sustained serious injuries in the crash on Sawmills Lane in Brandon just before 4.45pm on Friday (January 9) and was rushed to hospital.

Sadly, the 60-year-old pedestrian died at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle today (January 10) as a result of his injuries.

The van driver, who was behind the wheel of a white Citroen Dispatch, was uninjured.

After the smash, police closed the rod but it has since re-opened.

An investigation is now ongoing into the crash, as police appeal to for witnesses and dashcam footage.

A Durham Police spokesperson said: “Officers are working to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

“The road was busy with vehicles at the time, and investigators would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam footage that could assist their enquiries.

“Anyone who can help is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 261 of January 9, or contact us online at www.durham.police.uk.”
