A man has been stabbed to death by his girlfriend’s son moments after giving her a Christmas kiss.

Leandro Flaeschen Moreira , 41, was pronounced dead a short time after the split-second attack during Christmas dinner. Caio César dos Santos Bartolomeu, 18, was arrested at the scene following the incident, which unfolded at a home in Jaguariúna, a town in the Sao Paulo region of Brazil yesterday.

The teenager is believed to to have disapproved of his mother Sidneia Gonçalves dos Santos, 51, and Leandro’s relationship. Local reports said that at midnight, when his mum wished her boyfriend a ‘Merry Christmas,’ Leandro responded with a kiss – prompting Bartolomeu to pull out a knife hidden in his pocket and stab him.

Sidneia was also injured as she attempted to hold her son back. A statement from a neighbour said he had been alerted by Leandro’s screams, and entered the property to find a bloodied Leandro dead on the ground.

Leandro’s daughter, a 16-year-old girl, also witnessed the attack She was taken by the Child Protective Services and is to be placed in temporary foster care.

Bartolomeu had already fled the scene by the time the Jaguariúna Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM) was called, and allegedly went on to stab three more people in the surrounding neighbourhood.

Police have opened an investigation for homicide and bodily harm. Bartolomeu was detained by a police after being crowded by a mob of locals, and taken to hospital. He is set to face a police interview after initially being deemed unfit to answer questions due to his injuries and the effects of his medication.

Sidneia and the three further victims were rushed to A&E for urgent treatment, while Leandro’s body was sent to a forensic medical institute, and will undergo an autopsy.

It comes after five members of the same family including two children died in a horror Christmas Eve car crash in the same state in Brazil.

Luís Carlos de Souza Pinheiro, 36, and Paula Daniela Martins, 45, their children aged 12 and four, and Paula’s sister Dulcinéia Lozano died at the scene after the vehicle they were travelling in was smashed into by a BMW on Wednesday, causing it to burst into flames in the middle of the SP-331 motorway in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The driver of the BMW was meanwhile rushed to the Santa Casa de Pirajuí hospital, where he was found to have suffered minor injuries. He told police that the family car had been stopped on the carriageway with its lights off, and refused to provide a breathalyser sample. An investigation into the incident continues.
