‘Man United did something different in the transfer market this summer – and it could continue’

Manchester United were busy in the summer transfer window as they looked to back Ruben Amorim.

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has praised the club’s no-nonsense approach to the summer transfer market and believes it is something we could see more of over the coming years. United entered the summer transfer window with plenty of work to do after a lowly 15th place finish in the Premier League.

Without Champions League football, there was concern Ruben Amorim would not be able to sign the players he wanted. However, the Reds managed to strengthen plenty of areas within their squad. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens all arrived last summer.

Speaking to MEN Sport, BetWright betting ambassador Brown praised United’s approach and said it’s something we could see more of from the club. He said: “I think this is the first season as a collective group where the club have gone: ‘We want to buy these players, so let’s buy them,’ and they’ve managed to do so.

“I think that will continue for the next two years – football is a turning wheel, but I think Manchester United are going to see more players who will be outstanding for them and really take to the team. It’s taken a while, but at the same time, Amorim must have been under so much pressure to handle everything, so you have to give him credit for that.”

While the impact made by the new signings has been positive, there is still more work to do. Midfield is an area many hope will be addressed in the upcoming transfer windows.

Casemiro is out of contract at the end of the season and, as things stand, the Brazilian will be leaving Old Trafford. Harry Maguire also finds himself heading towards the final six months of his deal and Brown believes talks with the duo are likely top begin in January.

He added: “Casemiro is playing excellently again, but it’s a tough one because when you get to a certain age, it becomes hard for the club to justify giving someone an extra couple of years – it doesn’t work like that. I think it will firstly all depend on whether each player has any other offers elsewhere, and secondly, if the club want them to stay on, would they be happy to perhaps not play every single week?

“There’s a lot of things to consider. When you get to a certain age, I feel like you’re shown more respect by the manager and the owners – they tell you more and are more open with you about things.

“The one thing I will say is that you see a lot of players at that age with a year to go on their deals and I’ve seen them fob it off, but Harry Maguire and Casemiro aren’t doing that. Harry is putting in some of the best performances coming on and helping the team despite receiving the most stick over the past three to four years that I’ve ever seen.

You can tell Casemiro still knows the game and knows what his body is telling him. There will be conversations about it in January, but nothing is 100% with these things.”
