Man who died in Sherburn airfield plane crash named at inquest
Trevor John Poulter, 76, was in the cockpit of the plane on November 2 at Sherburn Aero Club in Sherburn in Elmet, when tragedy struck.
An inquest was opened into his death at Northallerton Coroner’s Court on Tuesday (December 2) and heard Mr Poulter had taken off around 12.30pm, before getting into difficulty 200ft up.
After the wing of the plane fell off, the inquest heard that the plane fell from the sky and hit the ground nose-first.
Mr Poulter, originally from Bedford, was extracted from the aircraft by emergency services but was pronounced dead at the scene.
Assistant Coroner of North Yorkshire and York, Jonathan Leach, adjourned the hearing until a full inquest at a date yet to be fixed.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch previously confirmed it was probing the crash and sent a team of investigators to the site.
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police added: “Officers attended alongside other emergency services, and the man, believed to be the sole occupant, was pronounced dead.
“The man was in his 70s and from the Leeds area, the force said.
“His family is being supported by specially trained officers.”
