Mashed potatoes are the ultimate comfort food, but getting them just right can be tricky. However, one chef has shared a simple trick to make them taste amazing.

Creamy mashed potatoes make the ideal warming side dish for any meal during this season. Silky, velvety and indulgent, they provide real comfort when made properly, and a home-cooked version always beats anything available in the supermarket.

However, mastering that professional-standard flavour and consistency can be challenging.

To help those who struggle to create flawless mashed potato, culinary expert Amy Sheppard has revealed a foolproof method involving one crucial addition before plating up.

The professional says garlic butter transforms mashed potato perfectly – especially when it’s oven-baked as well, reports the Express.

This simple ingredient, which can be made in minutes, brings a lovely richness and taste to your mashed spuds, making them utterly fluffy and light.

And if you have never oven-baked your mashed potatoes before, it’s definitely worth trying. Topped with melted cheese, it elevates the side dish to new heights, and everyone at the table will love it.

Sharing on TikTok, Amy said: “When I was a kid, this was one of my favourite foods. When you bake the mashed potato with the garlic butter and the cheese, it goes really gooey and really fluffy – I swear I could eat a whole bowl of this by itself.”

Here’s how to make this recipe, which Amy claimed is ‘the best’ around.

Garlic butter mashed potatoes

Ingredients

  • 1.2kg of white potatoes
  • 60g soft butter
  • Three cloves of garlic finely chopped
  • A small handful of parsley finely chopped
  • 60ml milk
  • 100g grated cheddar cheese (plus extra for the topping)

Method

Firstly, peel the potatoes and chop them into medium-sized chunks. Pop them in a pot of cold, salted water and let them simmer until they’re soft enough to mash, whilst you preheat your oven to 200C.

Once the potatoes are done, drain them and pop them back into the saucepan, giving them a good mashing with a fork. Finish off with a potato masher until they’re smooth and fluffy.

Combine the butter with the chopped garlic and parsley. Stir it into the potatoes along with the milk and cheese, seasoning with a bit of salt and pepper, then give it a good mix until it’s smooth and well combined.

Spoon the mash into an oven-proof dish and sprinkle over some grated cheese. Pop it in the oven for about 25-30 minutes until the top is a lovely golden brown.
