The alert is in force from 10pm tonight until 9am on Sunday (November 30) and covers Darlington, County Durham and Northumberland.

According to the Met Office, rainfall earlier in the evening will leave surfaces wet, and as temperatures drop widely below freezing, this moisture is expected to freeze on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

As a result, commuters and anyone heading out late tonight or early tomorrow are being urged to take extra care.

Forecasters warn the icy conditions could lead to:

  • Slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Hazardous travel on untreated roads
  • Icy patches developing across pavements and cycle routes
  • Heavy rain across the region is also expected to turn to hail in some places, with snow likely over the Pennines as colder air moves in.

The incoming bad weather has already prompted cancellations.

The South Shields 2025 Christmas Market, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed until December 6, with South Tyneside Council citing poor weather conditions as the reason.

Elsewhere, a yellow rain warning remains in place across parts of Yorkshire and the East Midlands until midnight, with the threat of flooding and travel delays.

More alerts are expected early next week as unsettled conditions continue.

After a brief break in the weather on Sunday, expected to be dry and sunny for most of the North East, conditions will deteriorate again as December begins.

An amber rain warning is already in place for South Wales, while yellow warnings will affect western parts of England and Wales throughout Monday.

Although the North East has no additional weather alerts beyond tonight’s ice warning, Monday is forecast to bring persistent rain, albeit with slightly milder temperatures.

Bright spells and showers are expected for Tuesday and Wednesday.
