The tree reflects an era of unity and community pride

Cambridgeshire’s famous Mill Road lit up with festive spirit this week as the Mill Road Traders Association (MRTA) proudly unveiled a Christmas tree on the iconic Cambridge street – an event believed to have happened only three times in more than 100 years. The beautifully decorated tree, installed on the grounds of St Barnabas Church, marks a milestone moment for one of the city’s most diverse and characterful streets.

The project, led by the newly elected MRTA leadership team, reflects a renewed era of unity, collaboration, and community pride. A large crowd of traders, residents, families, and community partners gathered for the switch on ceremony, led by Paul Bristow, Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, who counted down to the moment the tree illuminated Mill Road.

The idea to bring back a Christmas tree to Mill Road was a top priority for the revitalised MRTA leadership. After exploring multiple potential sites, St Barnabas Church offered to host the tree, enabling a smooth collaboration between local businesses, volunteers, and partners.

The project was funded by Mill Road traders, installed by a professional company, and supported by several contributors. Historic insight was provided by Tansy of The Old Chemist Shop on Mill Road, whose family has served Mill Road for over a century and confirmed this is only the third Christmas tree to ever stand on the street.

MRTA Chair Kobir Ahmed, who has spearheaded recent efforts to strengthen the Traders Association, shared a message of unity. He said: “This Christmas tree is for the whole community regardless of faith, background, or tradition. Learning that this is only the third tree in Mill Road’s long history makes this a truly special moment.

“Our vision at the MRTA is built on collaboration. This project proves what can be achieved when traders, residents, churches, and local partners come together with a shared purpose. Mill Road is a unique place, and this tree stands as a symbol of unity, hope, and togetherness. And this is just the beginning we’re committed to celebrating all major festivals, including Easter, Ramadan, Diwali, and Chinese New Year. Mill Road is strongest when everyone feels included.”
