A new World War II film streaming on Prime Video is already proving popular among viewers

A new war film set during the Second World War, which fans are describing as a “masterpiece”, is now available to stream in the UK. The Tank (2025) takes place in 1943 and centres on a fictional five-man German crew operating a Tiger Tank who have been dispatched on a perilous rescue mission behind enemy lines on the Eastern Front.

However, their already hazardous objective becomes even more complicated due to the amphetamines the soldiers are taking, a widespread practice amongst German troops serving Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. David Schütter takes on the role of Lieutenant Philip Gerkins in this dark and unconventional interpretation of the war genre.

The film, known as Der Tiger in Germany, was helmed by director Dennis Gansel, who co-authored the screenplay with Colin Teevan. After its release on 2nd January, it has now become Prime Video’s most-streamed German film of all time.

It has also reached the top position in 28 Prime Video countries and is the first German film produced by the platform to be released in cinemas before streaming.

One viewer on IMDb commented: “Mind blowing. Must watch. It’s really difficult to describe without getting into spoiler territory. All I’ll say is that things are not what they seem.

“Excellent anti-war film while being diabolically entertaining. Get off your phone and computer and pick up the damn TV remote. You need to watch this now”, reports the Express.

Another viewer remarked: “The Tiger doesn’t just entertain, it pulls you in completely. Easily one of the most gripping and emotionally charged films I’ve seen recently.”

Some viewers criticised the plot as far-fetched and expressed dissatisfaction with the conclusion. However, others were captivated by the unusual emphasis on the soldiers’ mental state, believing that the film’s climax was effective, suggesting those who disagreed might have been anticipating a more action-packed thriller.

One enthusiastic viewer commented: “What a treat. Watch and enjoy. I applaud everyone involved in making this movie. Well done. Once you have seen it you can never forget it.

“Everything from the writing to direction, camera work, sound etc are stunning. I understand the people who thought it was a normal war movie may have been a bit stunned but this is far more than that.”

Another shared their perspective: “Although many other reviewers say the ending was lacking or was a bad plot twist I think it was the best one they could do.

“It is my belief that those that are dissatisfied with the ending failed to think upon it and were expecting a dopamine rushing action.

“But actually the ending gives us a dopamine rushing thought process of the past, actions taken and many regrets. It focused on a man being haunted by his past and trying to cope with it.”

The film carries a 15 certificate and includes scenes of violence, injury detail, threat, and distressing sequences – hence, viewer discretion is strongly advised.
