Mo Salah’s ‘secret’ meeting with Jordan Henderson sparks Saudi Arabia transfer theory

Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool is currently uncertain after a public falling out with manager Arne Slot – and his meeting with Jordan Henderson has fuelled speculation of a transfer

Mohamed Salah travelled to London to chat to his former Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson on Wednesday with his future at the club in doubt. Salah was left out of the Reds’ squad for their Champions League tie against Inter Milan and sought the advice of his ex-captain with the possibility of a January transfer on the horizon.

The 33-year-old’s future at Liverpool hangs in the balance after he slammed Arne Slot in an explosive interview on Saturday. Salah accused his manager of throwing him under the bus by dropping him from the side from recent matches.

The club’s hierarchy have backed Slot’s decision, however, and Salah is wanted by clubs in the Saudi Pro League when the January transfer window opens for business. Slot and Salah are poised for showdown talks in the coming days before he jets off to play for Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Saudi clubs Al-Hilal, Al-Qadisah and Neom are all interested in securing Salah’s services, while US sides San Diego and Chicago Fire are also monitoring developments. The three Saudi clubs will certainly be intrigued by Salah’s movements on Wednesday, with The Sun publishing photos of him meeting Henderson in a west London restaurant.

The former team-mates were snapped by an eye witness having lunch together at Scalini in Chelsea. Both players wore face masks and hats as they tried to avoid prying eyes, but Salah asking Henderson questions during their 90-minute meal didn’t go unnoticed.

The report suggests that Salah was asking Henderson about his time playing for Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. The England midfielder left Liverpool in July 2023 and joined Al-Ettifaq, who were then managed by Steven Gerrard, for an ill-fated six-month spell in the Middle East.

He lasted until January 2024, when his contract was terminated by mutual consent and he arrived back in the Premier League at Brentford, via a spell with Ajax. Henderson shared a dressing room with Salah for six years at Liverpool and the two remain close friends.

It is not known what the two discussed but the meeting comes at an intriguing time for Salah, who is weighing up his options as the January transfer window approaches. Liverpool are understood to be open-minded over his future, given Salah is on £350,000 per week and contracted until June 2027.

Given the money involved, Saudi Arabia represents the most likely exit route. Liverpool rejected an £150million offer from Al-Ittihad in September 2023 and the Kingdom has continued to court Salah ever since.

Pro League chief Omar Mugharbel confirmed on Thursday that “Salah is welcome” in Saudi. Liverpool have yet to confirm whether the forward will be involved in their Premier League game against Brighton on Saturday.
