A family has been torn apart just days before Christmas after a mum has tragically died after plunging from the tenth floor of a tower block with her three-old twins in her arms.

The 48-year-old was killed instantly and while her children were rushed to hospital alive they have been described as ‘critically injured’ following the horror incident in Madrid. One of the twins has been admitted to Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital, while the other is in the children’s hospital of Hospital Infantil Niño Jesús.

Named only as Maria, the Spanish mum was said to have bought presents for the youngsters from a nearby shop just hours earlier. The family had gathered a day earlier to celebrate the children’s birthday.

A spokesman for the city ambulance service said: “We can confirm the death of a woman who plunged from the tenth floor of a block of flats in Ricardo Ortiz. Two children aged three have been taken to different hospitals.

“National police are conducting an ongoing investigation. Local police and firefighters were also mobilised.”

It comes after a 25-year-old man has tragically died after falling from height at a block of flats.

An air ambulance was seen hovering over the scene yesterday, while a large police cordon was put in place, blocking the entrance to flats, witnesses said on social media. Investigators were spotted on the ninth floor of the building.

It is now understood the 25-year-old died following catastrophic injuries yesterday evening. Meanwhile, a man, 37, who was arrested on suspicion of assault remains in custody. An update issued by West Yorkshire Police pleaded for anyone with information to “come forward”.
