National Guard soldier shot in DC has ‘mortal wound’ her father says: Updates

Head of immigration says certain Green Card holders will be reexamined

Green Card holders who come from “countries of concern” will be reexamined, the head of Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Thursday.

In the wake of the attack on two National Guard members, Joseph Edlow, the head of USCIS, said any Green Card holder from the list of concerning countries will undergo a “full-scale, rigorous” reexamination.

The announcement was made at the direction of President Donald Trump

The State Department currently identifies Burma, China, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Nigeria, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan as countries of particular concern.

Algeria, Azerbaijan, Central African Republic, Comoros and Vietnam are on the “special watch” list.

Afghanistan, the country in which the suspected shooter originated, is not on the list.

Governor of West Virginia visited with National Guard members

Governor Patrick Morrisey, of West Virginia, visited with the two National Guard members who were shot Wednesday as well as their families, in Washington, D.C.

“I’m asking every West Virginian to pray for our two Guardsmen as their families, friends, and neighbors struggle with this unspeakable tragedy,” Morrisey said in a statement.

“These two Guardsmen voluntarily stepped up and risked everything for our state and nation – they are our protectors and some of the most courageous West Virginians you could possibly imagine.”

In a press release from the governor’s office, they acknowledged the two Guard members were in “very critical condition.”

Family of Andrew Wolfe calls for prayers

In a phone call with the New York Times, a man at the family home of Andrew Wolfe, one of the National Guard members shot in D.C. Wednesday, said they needed “prayers.”

“All we need right now are prayers for my son,” the man, assumed to be Andrew’s father, told NYT.

He declined to give further details about Andrew’s condition.

Father of Sarah Beckstrom says she has a ‘mortal wound’

The father of Sarah Beckstrom, one of the National Guard members shot on Wednesday, told the New York Times his 20-year-old daughter had suffered a “mortal wound.”

“I’m holding her hand right now,” Gary Beckstrom told the NYT over the phone.

“She has a mortal wound. It’s not going to be a recovery,” Beckstrom added.

Officials have said both Sarah and Andrew Wolfe, the other Guard member shot, were in “critical” condition.

Law enforcement investigation ‘coast to coast’

FBI Director Kash Patel said Thursday morning officials were investigating the shooting of two National Guard members “coast to coast” after the suspected shooter emerged as a resident of Washington state.

“We immediately, with our law enforcement partners in the Metropolitan Police Department and the interagency, secured the scene, seized the weapon, sent in our Evidence Response Team immediately to collect evidence and started doing block-by-block canvases,” Patel said during the press conference.

What charges does the suspected shooter face?

The man suspected of shooting two National Guard members could be facing potential charges of assault with intent to kill while armed, possession of a firearm during a violent crime or even the death penalty.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday morning that the Justice Department would pursue the death penalty against the suspected shooter should one of the National Guard members die.

As of now, U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said they were looking at three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, which carries a minimum sentencing of two years, in D.C., and a maximum sentence of 15 years.

The suspected shooter could also be charged with possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Official charges have not been brought against the man yet.
