The National Trust site is still packed with colourful plants even in the winter.

Even though the weather is quite gloomy throughout the winter, there are still plenty of outdoor spots that are worth visiting. If you need to get out and enjoy some fresh air with friends and family, one garden in Cambridgeshire has been recognised as one of the best to see at this time of year.

Bloom & Wild has picked out some of the UK’s “most inspiring gardens” that are worth braving the colder weather. The Winter Garden at the popular National Trust site, Anglesey Abbey, was included in the list and would be a great day out for the whole family.

Anglesey Abbey has 114 acres of gardens to look around with a “renowned sensory Winter Garden”. The site has a 3-mile circular walk that you can follow, which will take you around the woodland and around historic gardens so you do not miss anything on your visit.

The walk ends at the Winter Garden that is “planted for its sensory qualities of scent, texture, and bright colour” and makes the most of the low winter sun. Bloom & Wild has picked out some of the highlights from the garden including the Tilia Cordata, which come in “fiery red and orange tones”.

You can also look out for the red-stemmed dogwood that brighten up the area. From mid-January and throughout February, you will be able to see snowdrops at Anglesey Abbey.

The site has more than 500 varieties of snowdrops that can be seen along the winter walk, woodland path, and Jubilee Avenue. After exploring the gardens and enjoying the winter plants, you can take a look around the Jacobean-style country house where you can explore each of the historic rooms.

If you need some food after your walk, you can visit the Redwoods Restaurant for a light meal, snack, or hot drink. The Garden Office Café can be found by the house and overlooks the Rose Garden with drinks you can grab on the go.

Anglesey Abbey is around a 20-minute drive away from Cambridge via the B1102. There is a free car park available for visitors.

The site is free to enter for National Trust members. For non-members, entry to Anglesey Abbey costs £18 for adults and £9 for children between the ages of five and 17.
