Neil Lennon is returning home to Northern Ireland to be with his family

Neil Lennon’s father Gerry has passed away, with the Dunfermline manager returning to Northern Ireland to be with his family.

The Celtic legend took the reins at East End Park in March, steering the club clear of Championship relegation. The Pars have enjoyed a promising start to this season’s campaign, sitting just two points adrift of the play-off positions after amassing 22 points from 17 fixtures.

However, the Fife outfit have confirmed in an official statement that the 54-year-old Lurgan native will travel home this weekend to be alongside his loved ones. Deputy boss Ian Brunskill and assistant coach Kevin McDonald will oversee team duties for Saturday’s away encounter against Queen’s Park.

The club’s statement expressed: “Everyone at Dunfermline Athletic is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Gerry Lennon, father of our manager Neil Lennon.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Neil and his family at this difficult time. Neil will be home in Northern Ireland with his family and will not be in attendance at this weekend’s fixture vs Queen’s Park FC. Assistant Manager Iain Brunskill will lead the side for this weekend’s match along with Assistant Coach Kevin McDonald.”, reports the Daily Record.

Supporters were swift to offer their sympathies following the tragic announcement. One fan wrote: “So sorry to hear this! Thoughts with Neil and his family.”

Another supporter expressed: “Thoughts with the Lennon Family from ALL PARS FANS.”
