New 24/7 Snap Fitness gym set to open in Catterick Garrison
A planning application has been filed with North Yorkshire Council to change the use of the former Poundland store at the Princes Gate Shopping Park.
The application has been submitted on behalf of Snap Fitness, which already runs more than 1,000 gyms in 20 countries, including over 100 in the UK and Ireland.
The company, which runs on a franchise model, specialises in the 24/7 opening of its gyms.
As well as the change of use of the unit, the application seeks permission to extend a mezzanine floor in the building.
Supporting documents say the new use of the unit would benefit the town.
“The application premises is currently vacant, and has been so since the previous retail operator, Poundland, ceased trading from the premises in August 2025.
“Consequently, the proposed gym use of the premises, by both restoring active commercial usage within currently closed premises, and by enhancing the existing leisure offer within both the District and the specific town centre it is located within, will also contribute positively to the vitality and viability of Catterick Garrison town centre.”
The documents add: “Both gym users and employees (are) likely to also visit the other retail and food and drink premises within the shopping park either before or after attending the application premises.”
Snap Fitness announced in August that it now had 106 branches across the UK and Ireland, with plans to open a further ten in the coming months.
Kevin Yates, CEO of Snap Fitness EMEA, said at the time: “So much hard work has gone into getting the brand to where it is today and we’re all really excited about the direction we’re heading in.
“We have a fantastic network of franchisees and we’re striving to continue providing them with a product that stands out in the market.”
According to the application, the new gym would employ seven staff — three full-time and four part-time.
