Plans have been submitted to build a new Cambridge Airbase for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

A new airbase is needed for the East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) to ensure critical care can continue to be delivered in the area after a planned airfield closure.

Plans have been submitted to South Cambridgeshire District Council asking for permission to build the new Cambridge Airbase at New Shardelowes Farm, in Balsham Road, Fulbourn.

The planning documents said the proposals will see the “complete redevelopment of the former farm complex” to create the new airbase, including a hangar, offices, final approach and take off area, sleeping accommodation, and other associated infrastructure needed for the airbase.

The plans said the new facility is needed due to the planned closure of Marshall Airport in Cambridge by 2028, where two of the EAAA’s helicopters are currently based.

The closure was described as presenting a “significant operation challenge” to the charity, and highlighted the need for a new base to “ensure the continuity of service and to future-proof EAAA’s ability to deliver critical care across the region”.

The plans said that the new facility will also help improve response times, which it said would “strengthen the EAAA’s ability to save lives and alleviate suffering across East Anglia”.

The planning documents said: “The proposal represents a significant investment in the future of EAAA’s Cambridge operations and reflects the charity’s commitment to delivering world-class emergency medical care across East Anglia.

“The development will provide a purpose-built facility that supports both the operational and charitable functions of the organisation, enabling EAAA to respond more effectively to emergencies and continue its vital work in saving lives.”

The proposals will now be considered by the district council, which will issue a decision on whether the new airbase can be built.
