New Next store to open in York at Coppergate Centre
Next is set to open the large new store at the Coppergate Centre at 10am on Tuesday (December 2).
The retail giant is moving from Coney Street into the three-storey unit which previously housed Topshop, Topman and Miss Selfridge.
Next’s move from Coney Street comes as work prepares to start on a major remodel of the area, which aims to better connect the street to the nearby riverside.
The Helmsley Group, as The Press has reported, is preparing to start work on its Coney Street Riverside masterplan. Its development manager, Max Reeves, told The Press in June that the masterplan is a “difficult, complicated scheme” but insisted: “It will be delivered in its entirety.”

Next said the new store at the Coppergate Centre has allowed it to offer more products, including doubling its space for menswear.
Store manager Andrew Chamberlain-Smith said the team has also been doubled at the new premises.

“It’s so exciting to be opening a fabulous new store in the York city centre,” Andrew said.
“The team from Coney have moved over and we have doubled the work force in store, so there are lots of new faces to get to know and work alongside.
“The new store is looking amazing and we can’t wait to welcome customers in to have a look.”

Next said there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the new store’s opening, with good bags on offer for the first 75 customers. There will also be discounts handed out over the opening weekend, it added.
The new opening comes after Roxy Lanes had initially been given the green light to convert the Coppergate Centre unit into a premises in 2021.

But, as The Press reported, Roxy Lanes later changed its mind and decided to open its new venue in Stonebow House.
The building had been left unoccupied after Topshop closed in early 2021. Online fashion retailer Asos took over the business from collapsed retail empire Arcadia but said the deal did not include the company’s stores.
