New Year’s Day dips at Whitley Bay and Saltburn beaches

At Whitley Bay, in North Tyneside, the promenade came alive with excitement as participants of all ages ran into the frosty North Sea.

In pictures, children and adults alike can be seen leaping into the waves, arms flung wide, faces lit up, while onlookers cheered from the sandy shore.

Some choose to bite the bullet and run straight in, while others waded in slowly. Friends and family posed mid-splash, capturing the fun and smiles at the annual tradition.

Saltburn’s New Year’s Day dip brought a similar joyful atmosphere to the pier. Participants donned wetsuits and colourful dress before gathering ahead of the plunge, ready to face the waters.

Originally a small tradition dating back to the 1960s, the Saltburn dip has grown into a lively event, where fun meets fundraising – as all registration fees and donations go to local causes. The 2025 Saltburn New Years Day Dip was in aid of SARA Animal Rescue.

Many participants raised sponsorships from friends and family, turning the fun splash into a meaningful contribution to charity.

New Years Day dips take place across the whole of the UK and North East – other towns hosting events across this festive season were South Shields, Seaburn, Whitby, Seaton Carew, Scarborough, and more.

For many, the dips are a chance to bond with neighbours, celebrate the new year and make memories that last beyond that first plunge.

As the sun reflected off the waves and the crowds lingered on the sand, it was clear the New Year’s Day dips delivered the perfect mix of fun, excitement and community spirit.
