North Yorkshire spa town full of surprises in Christmas film

Knaresborough, set near Harrogate, is one of the main filming locations for Tinsel Town, starring the likes of Kiefer Sutherland as Bradley Mack and Pitch Perfect’s Rebel Wilson as Jill.

Other cast members include Danny Dyer, Lucien Laviscount, Jason Manford and Katherine Ryan.

The festive Sky Original film sees Bradley (Sutherland), a failed Hollywood action star who ends up in a small, snow-dusted village, star in the town’s eccentric production of Cinderella.

Here, he encounters a colourful cast of oddball locals who slowly come to hold a special place in his heart, including no-nonsense choreographer Jill (Wilson).

Tinsel Town was filmed in Knaresborough earlier this year and in February, the spa town was transformed into a magical winter wonderland, seeing local independent businesses such as Chamber of Trade, decked in dazzling decorations.

Kelly Young from the hair salon told the BBC at the time: “We knew it was going to be going on but not at what level.

“We’ve had some films in the past in Knaresborough that were more low-key. This is obviously very high-end, we’ve got Hollywood movie stars and A-listers, so it is getting a little bit exciting.”

Throughout production, Harrogate’s shops and cafés also got in on the action as part of the festive background scenery.

Meanwhile further afield, Wetherby was bursting with Christmas cheer as the town centre and town hall were dressed up for two full days of filming.

But Knaresborough isn’t just a dreamy destination to visit around Christmas time, as its warren of medieval streets, “amazing” views, weekly market and summer “coastal feel” make for the perfect adventure any time of year.

Visit North Yorkshire shared: “The town centre is perched on the cliffs above the River Nidd and the imposing railway viaduct across the Nidd Gorge offers an amazing view to visitors as they arrive by train.

“There are plenty of things to do in Knaresborough all year round. The marketplace in the centre of the town offers a great place to enjoy a cup of tea or something delicious and home-baked.

“On a Wednesday stalls fill the marketplace offering tasty produce, whole foods, plants and flowers, as well as pretty much anything else you can imagine, in the ever-popular Knaresborough Market.

“At the base of the cliffs on which the town sits, you will find a delightful promenade that traps the sun in summer, with a coastal feel despite being more than 60 miles from the sea. This is a great place to enjoy an ice cream or indulge in the traditional English pastime of ‘simply mucking about in boats’.”

It adds: “The Nidd Gorge is a beautiful wooded landscape just upstream of the town, rich in wildlife and following the winding course of the river Nidd. The Nidd Gorge makes a great spot for walks, picnics and wildlife watching for all the family.

“Jump on the bike and go for a ride; the Beryl Burton Cycle Way is a Sustrans route allowing cyclists to ride to Harrogate, Bilton and Ripley on traffic-free routes. With a stunning view from atop the grade II listed Nidd Valley Viaduct, idyllic paths through fields and the odd pub along the way, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon.”
