One person in hospital after 'serious collision' on A1(M)

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) confirmed they were called to the crash on the southbound carriageway between Junction 63 at Chester-le-Street and Junction 62 at Carrville at 3.33pm today (December 22).

The service said they took one person to University Hospital North Durham (UHND) for further treatment.

A spokesperson said: “We received a call at 3.33pm on Monday, December 22, to reports of a road traffic incident on the A1 before junction 62 near Durham.

“We dispatched an ambulance crew to the scene and transported one patient to UHND for further treatment.”

The road remains closed on the southbound carriageway, while one lane of the northbound carriageway is also shut.

According the AA, there are rush-hour delays of 27 minutes with National Highways describing the crash as a ‘serious collision involving a motorcyclist’.

Durham Police confirmed they also attended and advised motorists to avoid the area and find an alternative route if possible.

A spokesperson for the force said: “The A1(M) has been closed southbound following a collision on the Junction 62 exit slip road.

“The motorway is now fully closed southbound between Junction 63 at Chester-le-Street and Junction 62 at Carrville. One lane of the northbound carriageway has also been closed between the two junctions.

“Traffic is already building up and long delays are likely. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and find an alternative route if possible.”
