The award-winning classic is beloved by film fans
One of the greatest films of all time will be airing tonight at 10pm on BBC Two. The first installment of the iconic trilogy will be shown this evening, starring some of Hollywood’s biggest names. Based on Mario Puzo’s hit novel, The Godfather Part I follows the life of the Corleone crime family, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The iconic first of the trilogy features performances from Marlon Brando as the head of the family, alongside Al Pacino, and the late Diane Keaton. Acclaimed by critics and viewers alike, the film has a reputation as one of the best films ever made. Ranking highly on Rotten Tomatoes with 98 per cent of viewers enjoying it, the film follows the aging Mob boss and his family. The 1972 Best Picture, also won Oscars for Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay, alongside seven Golden Globe nominations, the film is often considered one of the greatest films made. Tom Hutchinson, of the Liverpool Echo, said: “It is a gangster film without any of the pity and hatred we might feel towards such aliens in our midst, because it recognises that in all of us there is the ignition towards power and criminality.”
A fan on Rotten Tomatoes wrote: “The Godfather is one of those movies where the reputation somehow undersells how good it actually is. Everything just clicks here.” Giving it a 10/10 rating, they added: “The Godfather isn’t just a great gangster movie—it’s a masterclass in storytelling, atmosphere, and character evolution that earns every bit of its legendary status.”
