Police have warned people about driving after they have been drinking
A pair of drink drivers have been banned from driving after being caught over the limit just before Christmas. Javan Kirwa, 23, of Fen Road, Cambridge, was stopped by Cambridgeshire Police officers just after 3am on December 18.
Kirwa failed to stop in Church Street. He continued to a dead end, climbed across to the passenger seat and exited through the passenger door.
Kirwa blew 77 at the roadside, which is more than twice the legal limit of 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath. In custody, he provided an evidential reading of 71.
Kirwa appeared at Huntingdon Magistrates Court on December 23. He pleaded guilty to drink driving and was disqualified for 18 months and given a £200 fine.
Officers also arrested Andris Podnieks, 43, of Sherbourne Close, Cambridge, after he crashed into a lamp post on Kings Hedges Road. He blew 71 at the roadside and gave an evidential reading of 57 in custody.
Podnieks appeared at Peterborough Magistrates Court on December 24 and pleaded guilty to drink driving. He was disqualified for a year and ordered to pay a £384 fine.
Sergeant Stephanie Corletto, from the Road Policing Unit said: “Please use these sentences as a reminder that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is never worth the risk. It endangers lives and can lead to serious consequences, including losing your licence, heavy fines, and even prison.
“If you’re drinking over the coming new year celebrations, plan ahead, arrange a taxi, use public transport, or nominate a sober driver. Don’t risk it behind the wheel.”
